KEY QUOTE: “Most women with significant morning sickness have a problem with B6 and B12. These vitamins are fat-soluble and need enough animal fat to absorb them well. If you take the huge prenatal pill with a large dose of folic acid, those can be nauseating by themselves. Eating keto helps prevent this.” — Dr. Adam Nally

Here’s what Jimmy and Adam talked about in Episode 43:

– Should I be concerned about the fat related digestion results of my stool analysis?

Hi guys,

I recently had a CDSA stool analysis to look for more information about my health. Under the absorption category, my fat related digestion is all quite high. I am wondering if this is common with keto since the test is norm referenced vs non-keto or is this something that needs to be addressed? Also of note is that the pH is quite high. Again, is this a keto thing? And what suggestions would you have?

Thank you,

Joe

1. Can a ketogenic diet be beneficial for morning sickness during pregnancy?

Hey Jimmy and The Doc,

Love your show and never miss it.

My wife is 6 weeks pregnant and she suffers a LOT with morning sickness. She just can’t stand it. I’ve been keto for about 10 months now (and loving it), but she is not. In fact, she does not have any desire or hunger at all because of all the morning sickness. And I’m afraid eating the fat on a ketogenic diet would make it worse since she is not fat adapted.

My question is: what role could a ketogenic diet play in relieving these morning sickness episodes? Is it safe to start a ketogenic diet at this point in the pregnancy? Would the keto adaptation phase of 2-4 weeks make it even worse given the possibility of keto flu and electrolyte imbalance?

I really want this topic to be addressed. Thanks a lot and keep up the good work,

Fernando from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

2. Is eating ketogenic detrimental to someone with a binge eating disorder?

I’ve been living keto most of the time for the last year and a half, and I’ve lost 130 pounds so far. I’m still overweight, but I spent most of my adult life well over 300 pounds for a 5’4″ woman. Needless to say, this is a huge change. Aside from the weight loss, eating keto has also helped to lessen the depression I’ve been struggling with since puberty. The problem I’m having is that I periodically get sucked into days of binge eating non-keto foods, which leaves me dealing with not only re-acclimating to ketosis but also a significant biochemical mood dive. When I’m on track (which is most of the time) my macros are 80/15/5, and I weigh/measure/plan/track my food so that’s quite accurate. My total carbs are around 20g/day. I very rarely test my ketones due to the cost of strips, but when I do my numbers are between 1.5 and 4. I test my fasting blood glucose regularly and it’s usually in the 70s.

When I’m looking at books and online programs for dealing with binge eating or food addiction, they all seem to be against even standard low-carb diets, much less keto. Their reasoning is that the restrictions lead to binge eating. Have you found that people with binge eating or food addiction problems need to eat a more “balanced” whole foods diet in order to mentally recover? I really don’t want to walk away from keto because it’s been so amazing for me, but I’m also scared that I’ll get sucked fully back into binge eating junk and end up back to where I started. Eating keto does decrease my cravings and appetite but for me they never quite go away. I’ve tried intermittent fasting and it’s consistently tipped me over into binging.

Thank you for what you do! I really like listening to your podcast.

Elizabeth

3. Are my carb cravings late in the day while eating keto physiological or habitual?

I’m insulin resistant and know that I do better and feel better on a keto diet. I’ve been low carb for 5 years. Everyday, I vow that it will be the day that I stick to a strict keto diet. I do great in the mornings eating bacon, greens, and eggs for breakfast, maybe some dinner leftovers for lunch such as a protein with cooked veggies or leftover salad. But the late afternoon and evening after dinner is when my best-laid plans fall apart. I grab a few handfuls of popcorn that my teenage daughter brought home and stashed in the pantry. Or I eat a bowl of sugar-free (but obviously not junk free or very low carb) ice cream I bought during my last trip to the store. Or I’ll go in the cupboard and grab a small piece of dark chocolate, but I’ll go back for one or two more pieces before I’m satisfied.

Are these cravings for something sweet and creamy, or salty and crunchy physiological or habitual? I know they keep me from being totally keto. One of the things I tell myself when I reach for that handful of popcorn or that bowl of sugar-free ice cream is, “I’ve been on track most of the day/week/month, I can treat myself to some of this.” Sometimes I don’t tell myself anything, I just have this deep craving, this obsessive thought, that something sweet and creamy will quench my craving. It’s like cigarettes or something!

Do you guys have any clue what can I do about it?

Margaret

– What impact do steam rooms and saunas have on ketone levels?

Hi Jimmy and Doc Nally,

Love the podcast. Very informative and loads of useful info. I have a question regarding the use of steam rooms and saunas. Will the use of these have any effect good or bad on ketone production? I typically use a steam room with temperature over 40 degrees Celsius once a week. Obviously it speeds up heart rate and is supposed to help the liver detox.

Thanks for any info you might have!
